The cultivation process of agarwood(Seedling cultivation, planting and management)

Overview

Agarwood is one of the precious medicinal herbs. It was first recorded in "Mingyi Bielu" and was classified as an upper-grade product in the wood category. It has the functions of expelling qi and tonifying the kidneys, and strengthening the kidney yang. It is divided into imported and domestic types. Currently, imports are rare and most of it is domestic Agarwood. This product is the part of Aquilaria sinensis (lour)gilg, a plant of the Magnoliaceae family, which forms resin after injury. It is mainly produced in Guangdong, Hainan Island, and the Guang Liangling Canyon, as well as Bo'ai and other places. Guangdong and Hainan have a long history of production and the best quality, and are one of the top ten famous medicinal herbs in Guangdong.

Growing environment

Born in the sparse forests and barren hills of the plains and hillsides, it prefers a warm and humid climate and can grow well in acidic yellow loam soil.

Cultivation method

1. Planting methods: There are two methods: seedling cultivation method and transplantation method.
(1) Seedling cultivation method: When the fruits mature in autumn, take the mature seeds and sow them immediately after collection. After seedling cultivation, strengthen management to ensure good growth. By the next year, transplantation can be carried out. (2) Transplantation method: Use the 1-year-old wild seedlings that naturally sprout under the mother tree for transplantation. The best transplantation season is early spring from February to March. The row spacing is 3-4 meters.

Cultivation and management

1. During the seedling growth period, it is necessary to frequently remove weeds, water, maintain moisture, and apply fertilizer 1-2 times. After transplantation, during the young tree stage, remove weeds 1-2 times each year.
2. Cultivating agarwood: Select trees with a trunk diameter of 30 centimeters or more. At a height of 1.5-2 meters from the ground on the trunk, make several cuts with a knife, about 3-4 cm deep. Wait for the tree to secrete resin and be infected by the fungus, and it will gradually turn brownish-black. After several years, the agarwood can be harvested. The new wounds caused during the cutting process can still continue to form agarwood.

Another method

At a height of about 1 meter above the ground, several small holes with a depth of 3-6 centimeters and a diameter of 3-10 centimeters are drilled into the trunk. This is commonly referred to as "opening the fragrant door". Then, these holes are sealed with mud. As the resin secreted by the woody part near the wound accumulates over time, after several years, a piece of agarwood will form and can be harvested. Sometimes, even dead white sandalwood trees can yield agarwood. This type of agarwood has a longer history, a higher lipid content, and better quality, but the yield is not large.

With each step closer to the Agarwood, there is a purification of the soul, as if stepping into the garden of the gods.

Agarwood is a type of wood that has formed resin. Due to the increased density of the resin, it can sink to the bottom of the water, hence it is called Agarwood/Oud.It is not the name of a tree species, it actually occurs when a tree undergoes natural disasters such as lightning strikes, wind damage, insect infestations, or human destruction. During the tree's self-repair process, the oil produced by the tree is infected by bacteria, and at the same time, it is affected by a humid and hot environment. The wounds are corroded and parasitized by fungi. Subsequently, under the action of the fungal bodies, producing aromatic resin over many years.
